This post will show you 5 quick ways to decorate without spending a penny. If you have a few hours at the week-end you can create a new look in your home without stepping foot into a store and without stretching your budget. A lot of people – with homes desperately in need of makeovers – think that they need to need to wait until they’ve saved up enough money before they can do anything about it.

In the same fashion, people who’ve just moved into their new homes spend ages waiting for enough cash before attempting to do any sort of decorating. This is why this post will show you how you can use the things you already have to give your home that update it needs.

Use old pillowcases to make cushion covers

Most people have unused pillow cases lying around. You don’t need to buy expensive covers to decorate your sofa. Instead, use your old cushions and fashion a new case out of a pillowcase you don’t use very often. You don’t need to have a sewing machine to do this. I’ve made cushion covers sewing by hand on a number of occasions.

Take blankets out of storage

Most of us have blankets languishing in a dark cupboard somewhere. We keep them to use when we have guests of for extra warmth in the winter. At all other times, they’re potentially pretty, colourful items that aren’t been put to use. Take out your blankets and use them for decoration. The smaller ones can be used for throws on couches and the larger ones could be used on the edge of your bed. Scarves can also be used for this purpose.

Display your finds

Most people have stones and shells they’ve collected from holiday. I also have a collection of pretty cards sent to me over the years which I couldn’t bear to throw out. You can display your collection of shells in a pretty bowl or frame a beautiful card/cards you’ve been keeping. These items can go in your bathroom, on your mantle piece, or in any other part of the house.

Move your curtain rods

If you have long curtains, consider moving your curtain rods nearer to the ceiling. This will create a sense of having a higher, bigger room. Make sure you measure your curtains properly to be sure they’ll still be long enough when/if you move the curtain rods.

Use left over wall paper

You can use left over wall paper to line the backs of your bookshelves. You can also incorporate left over wall paper into your wall decor. If you have a chair that needs a boost you can place it in front of a plain wall, put a bright-coloured cushion on it, then wall paper a small section of the wall behind the chair (providing all the colours complement each other). This corner of the room will stand out beautifully and complement the rest of the immediate area.

Use your kids paintings

Kids always use bright colours to paint their pictures. Why not use these in old picture frames to create a constant change of artwork in your home. You’d be surprised how great these would look when they’re framed.

Use left over paint

You can see what I’ve done at this post with paint. These jobs were all done using left over paint. Remember that paint is not limited to your walls. It can be used on furniture as well. Dig out your left over paint from your garage or shed and give an item in your home a makeover. You’d be surprised how much change it will bring about in a room when one item has been given a new lease of life.
