Are you leaving your home during the holidays? If you are, don’t forget that a high percentage of burglaries occur during this time of year. I suppose this is because homeowners are so excited to finish work and get away to see their loved ones, they forget to take the normal safety procedures. Whatever type of home you live in, here are 4 brief safety precautions to take before you leave.
1. Leave a light (or your TV) on a timer. You can get a timer cheaply from any DIY shop.
2. Don’t leave side gates, back gates or front gates unlocked. Actually lock them with padlocks. Don’t make it easy for burglars to break into your home.
3. Get your neighbour to remove mail from the front door if they’re piling up. A large amount of mail says you’re away when cold callers stop by.
4. If you have locks for your windows, use them when you’re away. If they have to break their way in they’re less likely to go unnoticed.
And for the packing, here’s a fantastic tool

We are staying home this year but these are good tips for the future. One thing I would add would be to have someone pick up those daily newspapers too. We have the paper stop delivery while we are away and ask the post office to hold our mail until we return. Friends and neighbors can be forgetful.
Merry Christmas!

Merry Christmas to you too, Judy. Yes, that’s a valid point. Papers on the doorstep can be a dead giveaway that no one’s in.
